    Introduction

The Parliamentary Affairs Department acts as an important link between ministerial departments and the Maharashtra Legislature Secretariat.

Prior to 1975, coordination of legislative work was managed by the General Administration Department and the Law and Judiciary Department. To ensure better coordination and efficiency in legislative matters, the Legislative Affairs Department was established on July 01, 1975, on the basis of the Central Government’s structure. Subsequently, on June 30, 1978, the department was renamed as “Parliamentary Affairs Department”.

Although the Parliamentary Affairs Department was created separately, initially, the establishment of the General Administration Department and the Parliamentary Affairs Department was common for administrative reasons. As the nature of work of the Parliamentary Affairs Department was independent and sensitive, the establishment of the Parliamentary Affairs Department was made independent from the General Administration Department from 8th January 2016, on the basis of the Central Government’s structure. Since then, the Parliamentary Affairs Department has been functioning as an entirely independent department.

The Parliamentary Affairs Department does not implement any schemes or programmes of the State or Central Government. It does not provide any direct services related to the citizens. There are no field offices, institutions, boards or corporations functioning under this department.
